BRITAIN`S IRON LADY IS
DEAD
Margaret Hilda Thatcher, known as Baroness Thatcher, was born the 13th of October in 1925, and died this Monday, the 8th of April in 2013. She was the first woman to be a Prime Minister in Great Britain and Northern Ireland from 1979-1990, and the leader of the Conservative Party from 1975-1990.
In 1943 she begun to study on Somerville College in Oxford, and in 1947 she graduated with top university grade after a four-year bachelor's degree. 5 years later she was qualified as a barrister in tax issues. During her years on college she met her future husband, David Thatcher. They got married in 1951, and got two children who they named Mark and Carol.
Thatcher was elected to be president of the Conservative Students Association Oxford University in 1946. She sat as a representative in the House of Common from 1959 until 1992. The 11th of February 1975 Margaret Thatcher was elected to be the leader of British Conservative party, and also Great Britain and Northern Ireland`s Prime Minister.
Baroness Thatcher was the longest-serving Prime Minister Britain ever had in the 20th century, and also the only woman to claim this job. Under her leadership the party won a majority in the House of Commons in three successive general elections:
- 3. May 1979 (339 of 650 seats, 43.9% of the vote)
- 9. June 1983 (397 of 650 seats, 42.4% of the vote)
- 11. June 1987 (376 of 650 seats, 42.2% of the vote)
The Baroness admires says she rejuvenated Britain`s economy. Mrs Thatcher`s critics says she helped the rich to get richer and the poor were left behind. After her death the British people have reacted in different ways. Some are really celebrating her death, because they are still “pissed” at her controversial politics. While others who really admire her as a person and the Prime Minister of Great Britain and Northern Ireland from 1979-1990, are devastating and sad.
Baroness Thatcher's funeral will be held at St Paul's Cathedral next Wednesday and attended by the Queen. Britain's longest serving Prime Minister and the only woman so far to hold the role will be given a ceremonial funeral with full military honors. It is the same status as that accorded to the Queen Mother and Diana Princess of Wales, although some Tories want a full state ceremony.
